Surfers for the Great Lakes is a loose organization of passionate surfers and watermen who rely on the Great Lakes for their livelihoods and playgrounds.

Our Surfers for the Great Lakes line is currently focused on the efforts to shut down Line 5- the decrepit and corroded 68 year old pipeline carrying nearly 23 million gallons of oil and natural gas liquids daily through the heart of the Great Lakes, in the Straits of Mackinac, where Lake Michigan meets Lake Huron. It’s here, at depths between 100 and 270 feet, where it is stressed by strong currents and prone to anchor strikes.

Despite the claims from the greedy Canadian oil company, Enbridge, Inc., Line 5’s products mostly serve Canada, and use Michigan as a shortcut for the pipeline, with less than 10 percent of the oil used in Michigan. Enbridge has been illegally trespassing and continuing to operate Line 5 in the state of Michigan since Wednesday, May 12th, 2021.

Our fearless Governor could not have said it better: “So long as oil is flowing through the pipelines, there is a very real threat of a catastrophic oil spill in the Great Lakes”.

20% of the world’s surface fresh water, drinking water for 5 million Michigan residents, Pure Michigan tourist economy… You know what is at stake. It is time to come together, shed some light, spread awareness, and shut down Line 5.
